From Vision to Action: Momentum is Building at NFARL
Earlier this year, we set out several bold new strategic initiatives. We kicked off our Education and Membership Strategic Initiative with a record-setting HamCram in May, and with our next HamCram set for October 24th, this biannual effort is officially cemented as a cornerstone of NFARL’s mission to welcome and grow new hams.
Now, it is time to launch our Second Strategic Initiative—one designed for every single member of NFARL, whether you’ve been licensed for 30 days or 30 years: The NFARL Antenna Opportunity Project.
Why Antennas? Why Now?
Whenever we survey our membership, one topic consistently tops the wishlist: Antennas and RF Performance.
Whether you are:
Navigating strict HOA restrictions and looking for stealth solutions,
Sitting on legacy antennas that need tuning, repairing, or modernizing,
Eager to build and test a brand-new design (EFHW, Yagis, loops, vertical arrays), or
A brand-new ham looking to get your very first station on the air...
This project is for you.
The Antenna Opportunity Project is built on a simple premise: Putting the fun, experimentation, and pride back into Ham Radio. Getting your signal out into the world is the heartbeat of our hobby—and your antenna is where the magic happens.
The Real Magic: Fall Knowledge Sharing & Elmering
An antenna project isn't just about wire, aluminum, and coax—it's about community.
As the autumn leaves begin to drop, we have a prime seasonal window to inspect property lines, analyze tree canopies, and get outside. The most exciting part of this initiative isn't just the hardware; it’s the unmatched collective wisdom of NFARL members.
This fall, we are pairing up, sharing technical know-how, and helping each other solve antenna challenges. Whether you need a second pair of eyes on a layout, advice on a balun, or help pulling a line over an oak branch, NFARL members are there to help.
STEP #1: GIS Mapping & Property Survey
Great antenna systems start with great planning. Before we raise a mast or solder a connector, Step #1 is establishing your baseline using County GIS Mapping.
Using modern, high-resolution County GIS tools, you will be able to:
- Analyze your exact property boundary lines and setback rules.
- Evaluate terrain, elevation profiles, and physical constraints.
- Use digital markup tools to map out wire runs, radial fields, mast locations, and sightlines.
How to Get Started Today:
- Visit the County GIS Portal: https://qpublic.schneidercorp.
com - Search for your parcel/property address.
- Use the mapping overlay tools to view lot lines, aerial imaging, and layout possibilities.
- Save or print your property map as your Personal Antenna Blueprint.
- Each wednesday we have a "Meet" at 7pm to review each map & antennas options
- Bring your plot map with your existing antennas marked and let's review possible improvements with the group.
Over the next 4 Wednesdays, we will hold small-group workshops focused on analyzing custom antenna placements for your property using county GIS Mapping & Survey data
- When: Every Wednesday from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
- Format: Small-group, hands-on slots (limited to 10 members per week) to give everyone dedicated attention.
The NFARL Challenge: "Get Out More"
As we launch this initiative, we are asking two simple things from every NFARL member:
- Investigate Your Plan: Take 15 minutes this week to map your lot, evaluate your setup, and define your goal for "getting out more" on the air.
- Help a Fellow Ham: Reach out, lend a hand, share your expertise, or join a neighbor for a site survey.
Together, we aren't just building better antennas—we are making the NFARL Antenna Opportunity Project a marquee success that redefines what member engagement looks like.
Let’s turn those property maps into signals heard around the world. See you on the air!
