POTA / SOTA Central

If you are not familiar with the Parks on the Air and Summits on the Air programs, this is one aspect of amateur radio you'll want to explore further.  These are 2 separate but related activities.  Both have Activators (those who go to a Park or Mountain Summit) and Chasers (those who contact the Activator).

Parks on the Air (POTA)

Activators go to a designated POTA entity, such as a State or National Park/Forest, Wildlife Management Area, or Historical Site.  The key here is the state or national designation.  Your local city or county park will not qualify.  There are rules for selecting these areas, but we won't define them here.

If you would like to activate a POTA entity, check into this at https://parksontheair.com/.  Here is a list of all the qualified parks just in Georgia you can visit.  If you post your location data on the pota.app site while you are at the park, you will immediately become VERY popular on the air.

You can have fun right from your home QTH or mobile by being a CHASER.  To pursue, you'll want to go to pota.app and see who is activating a park RIGHT NOW.  You'll see that each park has a “K” designation followed by 4 digits, then the frequency and mode of the operation.  Try contacting one of these stations by simply sending your callsign when a CQ or QRZ is heard.  It's that simple!

Summits on the Air (SOTA)

This is a bit more complicated and involves visits by activators to mountain summits that have been pre-qualified as official summits.

Take a look at the website of the GA state SOTA coordinator, Kevin Kleinfelter, http://k4kpk.com/sota-menu.html and especially, his ebook - http://k4kpk.com/sota-serial-ebook.  It has full info on this exciting program.

To see what is a valid SOTA summit in Georgia, go to https://www.sota.org.uk/ and check out the Georgia summits at https://summits.sota.org.uk/association/W4G.  You will see 3 regions.  One is for Central Ga (CE) where you'll see that there are 4 summits in this area. One is Sweat Mountain which is commercial property with limited access.  We used to have club repeaters on Sweat but no longer. Another is Kennesaw mountain, which you can actually drive up and park near the summit on weekdays at this time.

Chasers (affectionately called “Sloths” in this program) are the way you can participate from anywhere.  You'll see the list of summits which are being activated “real time” by going to: sotawatch3.  Work stations now and keep a log of your contacts and the summit they are on.  However, there is more to getting credit for the contact but that's enough to get you started.

Use 145.47 repeater for POTA/SOTA info

We encourage everyone to use the club's repeater to announce upcoming activations or other info such as frequencies and bands.  Ask questions or bring them to TechTalk on Mondays at 8:30 PM.  If you are active on a mountain or park somewhere, be sure to announce on the repeater if you are close enough or use Echolink to come onto the 145.47 repeater using the code 560686 on your cell phone loaded with Echolink software.
