2020 US Islands QSO Party
By Fred Ackley, W4FRA Via email Well the Aug 29, 2020 U.S. Islands Party is over. First, I want to thank the club members who braved all to participate at the West Bank Park Pavilion. Terry Joyner, W4YBV, came early to set up the two antennas and helped us get underway. Sam Proctor, KO4BCO, came early and stayed to the bitter end at 7:45 PM. We were assisted throughout the day by Wayne Garber, KE4WYU, Edith Collins, KN4NDV, and soon to be a NFARL club member Michael Wheable, KC6GPY, Michael, licensed long ago, is just getting back into the hobby […]

Continue reading2019 US Islands QSO Party and Club Picnic
by Bob Hensey, K4VBM NFARL members and guests gathered at Lake Lanier’s Mary Alice Island on August 24th to compete in the US Islands QSO Party and celebrate summer with a club picnic. The day started out in a gorgeous fashion. The early birds set up the stations, the beam, dipole and several canopies. Another canopy was set up over the picnic table for all the goodies. The US Islands and US flag were added and proudly waved in the breeze. Early on QSOs were coming in nicely with some nice rotation between SSB, CW, and digital. VBM arrived with […]

Continue reading40th Anniversary US Islands Contest
By Terry, W4YBV We have devised a NFARL US Islands contest that will last throughout our 40th Anniversary Year! This is a year long event similar to the 2016 NPOTA program. It will operate under US Islands Awards Program rules and NFARL’s 40th Anniversary Contest rules. Contest participants will earn points by making contacts with any US Islands Awards Program operation, or by activating a new or existing US Islands island using the club call sign NF4GA. Note that all NF4GA QSOs also count toward USI awards. The club goal is to activate 40 US Islands using our club call, NF4GA, during our […]

Continue readingIt’s Midnight. Do You Know Where Your Radios Are?
By Tim, WK4U Article 5 in a series of 5 While it’s midnight here in Atlanta, it’s only 9pm on the West coast. Many folks are still awake in North America. Some stations are still broadcasting our way. Maybe favoring the “left” side if possible. It’s an interesting time. Not too many people to broadcast in their evening hours right now. Use any gray line program to see for yourself. Many broadcasts are either domestic, North American, or mostly towards Eastern Africa and the Middle East right now. So Tim, if I’m up this late, what are some of the […]
Continue readingIt’s Getting Dark for Shortwave in Atlanta! – 8pm
By Tim, WK4U Article 4 in a series of 5 The gray line, also known as the terminator (I’ll be baaack) is practically here. Do you know we can use the gray line to communicate (or hear other stations) much easier than normal? When it’s dusk here in Atlanta (in August), you can make contact with stations in Southern Greenland, Northern Scandinavia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Western India quite easily. Load any gray line program on your computer to see for yourself. By the way, if you’re an aspiring SWL or ham DX’er, you’ll use the gray line often. Sometimes twice […]
