What is the GOTA Station all about?

The GOTA station is a special part of ARRL Field Day, designed to bring new people into the exciting world of amateur radio. Under the friendly guidance of an experienced ham, you’ll learn how to operate the radio and talk to other stations. It’s simple, it’s fun, and it’s an incredible way to connect with people far and wide.

No license? No problem! You can absolutely participate and speak into the microphone or make digital contacts. Our licensed control operator will be right there with you, guiding you every step of the way, ensuring everything runs smoothly and within FCC regulations.

GOTA Station Rules – Keeping it Fun and Compliant

The GOTA station operates under specific ARRL Field Day rules to ensure everyone has a fair and compliant experience. Here’s a quick overview:

  • Who can operate: Newly licensed amateurs (licensed since the previous year’s Field Day), generally inactive licensees, and non-licensed individuals under direct supervision.
  • Supervision is key: Non-licensed participants must always be under the direct supervision of a properly licensed control operator at the control point.
  • Any band, any mode: The GOTA station can operate on any Field Day band (HF or VHF) or mode, provided the control operator has the appropriate license privileges.
  • Logging participants: A list of all operators and participants will be included on the summary sheet submitted to ARRL HQ.
