Field Day Bulletin #2
June 3, 2008
Requests to Members
As Field Day approaches, we have a few requests for members of the club.
1. Club Field Day Buttons. We are in search of someone who can help
us design the buttons for this year's event. As many of you recall,
Dave Moore (KU4MT) enlisted the aid of some of his students to design
last year's button, and it was a huge hit with everyone. Well, this
year we missed getting with him by about a week, and school was
already out. If there is anyone in the club who has even a little bit
of artistic talent and would like to help out with this endeavor,
please let Steve (KC4YBO) or myself know as soon as possible. We need
to get any design off the the printer's as soon as we can so we ensure
we have the buttons back in time. The theme this year is "Ride the
Waves", and there are ideas for graphics on the ARRL web site at http://www.arrl.org.
2. Youth participation. There are bonus points to be had this year
for youth participation in Field Day. We earn 20 points per youth
participant (under age 18) who makes a single QSO during Field Day, up
to 100 points. So, if you are a member of the club under age 18,
please contact me and let me know when you'd like to operate and what
mode so we can pencil you in. If you know anyone under age 18 who
might be interested in ham radio, please bring them to Field Day.
We'll get them on the air and let them make a QSO. This is also about
more than just points; if we can ignite the radio spark (not to be
confused with the spark gap radios of yesteryear :-) ) in just one
more youth this Field Day, we'll be doing a service to that young
person and to the community.
3. GOTA Participation. There are significant points (500) to be had
for GOTA (Get On The Air) participation this year. Eligible
participants are any ham who got licensed since last Field Day, or any
ham who has not worked an HF contact in the last two years. We will
have a dedicated GOTA station at Field Day, available for the entire
24 hour period. Working the GOTA station does not eliminate you from
working our regular stations. If you'd like to work a one- or
two-hour GOTA shift, then work a regular station later in the event
(or vice versa), that is not only allowed, but encouraged. I strongly
encourage anyone who meets the GOTA criteria to sign up for at least
one shift on the GOTA station and a shift on a regular station if you
so desire. Again, please send me an email with the time you'd like to
operate, either on the GOTA station or one of our other stations.
That's all for now. If anyone has any questions, comments, concerns,
suggestions, or other input regarding field day, please contact either
Steve or myself. You can reach Steve at kc4ybo@nfarl.org and me atak4ik@nfarl.org.
